Materials Scientist/Engineer
Exeter, New Hampshire, United States – ams-OSRAM USA Inc.
What we expect
ams-OSRAM OS is currently seeking a Scientist/Engineer to join our Research & Development team. The candidate is expected to take part in research and technology development projects but also to be able to guide colleagues and lead work packages or entire projects. Typical projects focus on improving key parameters of different materials (for example polymers, ceramics, glasses and/or composites, including nano-size materials) or establish an understanding for moving in novel directions with designed materials solutions used in the packaging of optoelectronic devices. This involves exploiting interrelationships between mechanical/thermal/optical properties, chemical composition, processing, microstructure, defects and the resulting performance. He/she will use a variety of materials chemistry and diagnostic methods, investigate preferred precision fabrication operations, and work together with precursor and other external suppliers.
The successful candidate will join a skilled and motivated team for advancing current capabilities, developing new processes, and implementing new technologies. Participation in frequent interactions between research and development, engineering, and production colleagues is required for efficient implementation of innovations in development and scale-up/industrialization, and for recommending potential improvements in manufacturing processes.
Exeter, NH is one of the centers of excellence for polymers, ceramics, glass, and composites within ams-OSRAM. The successful candidate joining the R&D team will be involved in the creation of materials and processes at state-of-the-art level to benefit various global business lines of the company.
Job responsibilities include:
- Provide expert input to running projects in materials science / chemistry
- Define and achieve project goals
- Lead research and development projects, if necessary
- Report progress regularly to stakeholders.
Who we are looking for
Required education and experience:
- Materials Scientist with MSc or PhD degree in Materials Science, Chemistry or another relevant discipline, with knowledge in a variety of materials used in optoelectronic device packaging
- Work experience in the fields of nanomaterials, polymers and/or composites chemistry (preferably five years or more) and some familiarity with applications in optoelectronic and packaging materials, processing, and measurements
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
- Great soft skills for collaboration/teamwork.
Additional skills (preferred):
- Experience with crystalline and amorphous luminescent or other optical materials (e.g. ceramics, glass, semiconductors etc) used in photonics, electronics and packaging, their characterization and analytics methods
- Experience in industrial R&D project coordination and/or team leading
- Good understanding of the scaling-up and industrialization processes (technology transfer to production, knowledge of manufacturing needs/preferences)
- Demonstrated practical implementation potential.
